The Hickory Music Factory (HMF) hosts dozens of events and programs in the Catawba community and serves over 20,000 people each year. The majority of these programs are free and open to the public and reach out to all ages, from children to seniors.

HMF Rock Camp @ HMF

Rock Camp: (Ages 11-17, some skills are required) -Students will rehearse throughout the week with their band and learn the essentials needed to perform on stage. There will be classes/clinics focusing on song writing, stage performance, music history, tone, and dynamics, as well as, music theory. The week will end with the students playing a concert on Friday night at the Salt Block Auditorium. Cost is $225 HMF Students and $250 non HMF Students. Accepting Scholarship and Work Study Applications @ Hickory Music Factory

The Hickory Music Factory (HMF) is now accepting scholarship and work study applications for music lessons. HMF offers a limited number of scholarships and work study programs to students ages 5-18 years of age. These are awarded on a quarterly basis. Applications need to be submitted on the dates listed above to be eligible for this scholarship/work study cycle. Financial need is assessed through written applications by the HMF board of directors. Funding for the scholarships are made possible through the Mark Weaver Scholarship Fund that helps provide lessons and programs to youth in the community who may not have the means to do so. Folk Ensemble Sign Up Deadline @ HMF

The Hickory Music Factory Folk Ensemble Fall semester is scheduled to start on September 14th. Upper middle and high school violin, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and percussion students with an interest in Folk, Traditional, Irish, and Bluegrass styles of music are welcome to participate. Example songs include Old Joe Clark, Irish Washerwoman, Raise a Rucks, and I Tell me Maw.

Practice will be held on Fridays at HMF from 5:15-6pm (with occasional longer practices before performances). Cost for the semester is free for HMF students (currently taking lessons) and $40 for non-students. Space is limited and is first come first serve.

Folk Ensemble Criteria:

Violin students should be comfortable playing in open position in keys of G, D, A, and C and be able to read music and play in tune.

Mandolin/Guitar/Ukulele – Be comfortable playing common strum patterns, know major and minor chords, and be comfortable playing in keys of G, D, A, and C.

Audition Song: Raise a Ruckus

Percussion – Be able to play steady beat on a washboard and snare drum.

Community Music Lessons @ Hickory Music Factory

The Hickory Music Factory in partnership with the Hickory Parks and Recreation Department, will be offering free music lessons to Hickory City residents. Anyone ages 5 and up are welcome to sign up for a private 30 minute lesson. Please call for a list of instruments being taught. No skill is needed to participate.

If you would like to sign up for a lesson, PLEASE CALL Angela Smith 828-324-6990. There will be a $5 charge for non Hickory City residents.

The Hickory Music Factory in partnership with the Hickory Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a music showcase. Bands and solo artists are welcome to sign up and play on the HMF Stage at Oktoberfest. PA and drums will be provided. Jazz Combo Auditions @ HMF

The Hickory Music Factory will be holding open auditions for their Jazz Combo on October 16th and 17th at 6:30pm at the Hickory Music Factory (1515 12th St Dr, NW, Hickory, 28601). Students in grades 8-12 are welcome to audition. Instruments include guitar, bass, drums, piano, voice, sax, trumpet, trombone, flute, and vibraphone. The Jazz Combo will rehearse on Wednesday evenings at HMF from 6:30-7:30pm. The Fall semester will start on October 24th and go through the end on January. Cost for the semester is free for HMF students (currently taking lessons) and $40 for non-students.

*If you are auditioning as a vocalist please memorize the lyrics for the prepared piece.

In addition, you may also sing another selection of your choosing.

*Drummers will be asked to demonstrate various rhythmic styles (Swing, Latin, Funk, Ballad).
