Violin 101, Beginner Class Feb 7-May 8
Group classes are an exciting way to learn violin and they can be an early introduction to ensemble music. The course starts with a general introduction of the instrument’s parts, how to take care of it, identify the strings by their name and position on the staff, followed by bow and fingers technique; it then moves on how to play simple songs and at the same time instilling a solid music theory foundation. This ensemble will incorporate and develop a manageable repertoire of American fiddle tunes in preparation for a proper contra dance to be held at Hart Square.
This ensemble is suitable for most beginners and ALL intermediate players. Appropriate instrumentation will include but will not be limited to, fiddle, flute, whistle, guitar, banjo, mandolin and acoustic bass.

Hickory Music Factory Tribute Concert
The Hickory Music Factory will host their 4th annual “Tribute Concert” featuring the Hickory Jazz Orchestra and guest bands the East Burke HS jazz band and the Hickory Music Factory youth big band on Jan 16 at 7:00 at the SALT block auditorium. HMF pays tribute to those people who have helped to promote and foster music within our community. This year HMF will pay tribute to Bob Taylor, Kent Duffield, and Bob Love. Bob Taylor was the former MS and HS band director for Hickory High, Alexander Central, East Burke, College Park, to name a few. In addition Bob has performed with his jazz groups throughout the area and North Carolina since the 1970's. Kent Duffield was a band director for several local High Schools as well as Rowan and Iredell Counties. He is a major supporter of local music. Bob Love passed away in 2012 leaving a legacy of providing musical instruments to all the surrounding county schools for 40 years. The Music Center, Inc. is now a chain of stores throughout the region and is the main source of musical equipment in the Piedmont. Mr. Love also taught band for 28 years at Hudson High School and later South Caldwell High School. The Hickory Music Factory will honor these 3 men by putting their names on the HMF Hall of Fame. Other such names include Loius Beam, Dr. Ralph Gabriel, Frank DiFabio, Gene Smithson, Jimmy Lackey, Jim Calabrese, Randy Ingold, and Charles Deal. The Hickory Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Rick Cline exists to keep the music of the big band era alive. The concert will feature classic big band arrangements. HIckory Music Factory is a thriving non profit music program and is directed by Liam Bailey and Rick Cline. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students and can be bought in advance by visiting www.hickorymusicfactory.com. Swingin Under the Stars!
Hickory Music Factory’s annual "Swingin’ Under the Stars" will be held in Downtown Hickory at the "Sails on the Square" on Sunday, May 26th from 6:30-9:30pm. The FREE outdoor event features the Hickory Jazz Orchestra and will perform big band arrangements from the great American songbook. Hickory Music Factory's “Swingin' Under the Stars” was the 2009 winner of the "Best Outdoor Event for NC".
In addition, the Hickory Music Factory will pay tribute to members of the community for their years of dedication and musical contributions. So put on your dancing shoes or bring a chair and relax and enjoy the show!

Drum Expo Sept 7
The Hickory Music Factory’s drumming studios offer a yearly drum set concert for HMF students. The Drum Expo takes place on the front lawn of the Hickory Music Factory and serves as a mid year recital for students to perform. “EXPO”, is short for EXPOSITION, which means talent show. Students will pick a song to perform and practice it with their instructor leading up to the concert. The event is free and open to the public to come and watch.

The Pandemonium Steel Drum Band under the direction of Rick Cline is a semester-long ensemble. Pandemonium performs locally at festivals and schools. Participation depends on availability of instruments and the ability to read music.

Uke Skywalkers February 7-May 8
The Uke Skywalkers ukulele ensemble offers adults the opportunity to play ukulele in a group setting. No prior experience is required to participate in the class and HMF has a limited number of ukuleles available for class use. The session will cover the basic aspects of ukulele performance including; care and tuning, reading tablature, playing simple melodies, chords and rhythm, accompanying others in a group setting. At the end of the semester the ensemble will offer a public performance of songs learned during the class.

Violin 101, Beginner Class Feb 7-May 8
Group classes are an exciting way to learn violin and they can be an early introduction to ensemble music. The course starts with a general introduction of the instrument’s parts, how to take care of it, identify the strings by their name and position on the staff, followed by bow and fingers technique; it then moves on how to play simple songs and at the same time instilling a solid music theory foundation. Other topics will be violin history, a short excursus on fiddle music/technique and different violin repertoires and styles.

This ensemble based program will give students the opportunity to perform for the community performing a medley of songs from classic and modern Broadway shows.

The Hickory Music Factory Jazz Combo under the direction of Rick Hefner, is a semester-long ensemble. The ensemble focuses on the study of the jazz art form, how to improvise, music theory, and playing in a group. The ensemble is for intermediate to advanced students. Students will be expected to be able to sight read music and have a basic understanding of chord theory.

The Factory String Band under the direction of Liam Bailey is a semester-long ensemble that explores North American Contra and Square-dance music! This ensemble will incorporate and develop a manageable repertoire of American fiddle tunes in preparation for a proper contra dance to be held at Hart Square.
This ensemble is suitable for most beginners and ALL intermediate players. Appropriate instrumentation will include but will not be limited to, fiddle, flute, whistle, guitar, banjo, mandolin and acoustic bass.
